Lightning Strike Hits House

Stormy night brings smoke, but no fire.

New Canaan Fire Company No. 1 responded to a report of a lightning strike and heavy smoke at 10:22 p.m. Monday night.

Lightning from a severe thunderstorm had struck the chimney of a house at 21 White Oak Shade Rd. and followed some wiring into the attic on the second floor. The smoke was emanating from damaged wires, but there were no flames.

Firefighters cleared the scene at 11:30 p.m.

Lightning strikes often cause havoc on electrical systems. Firefighters advised the homeowners to have an electrician check for switches and outlets needing to be replaced before they turn the power back on in the house.
