Man Charged With Drunk Driving

Greenwich Police: New Canaan man arrested in connection with October incident.

A who motorist caught the attention of an off-duty Greenwich Police officer working a side job because the driver's car had fresh extensive front-end damage, has been arrested on a drunken driving charge because his blood alcohol was nearly three times the legal limit.

The officer stopped the man on King Street, near Rye Lake Drive, who then told him he thought he was having a heart attack. Greenwich Emergency Medical Service took the man, identified as Stephen C. Wentzel, 33, who gave an address of 192 Park St., New Canaan, to Greenwich Hospital for treatment. Wentzel was unable to tell police where he crashed his car and police could not find any evidence of a crash near where Wentzel was stopped by the officer.

According police spokesman, Lt. Kraig Gray, blood tests revealed a blood alcohol level that was approximately three times over the legal limit of .8 after the Oct. 7 incident. After obtaining the blood test results, police obtained an arrest warrant for Wentzel who was charged Nov. 30. He was released on a $500 bond and scheduled to appear Dec. 7 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
