Police responding to a report of an automobile accident on Smith Ridge Road near Smith Ridge Lane arrived to find a 2003 Acura hatchback with what police describe as “severe front end damage” come to rest on a stone wall. The car was unoccupied and both airbags had deployed. The car was facing south in the northbound lane.

“Witnesses told officers they had observed the operator flee the scene on foot,” Sgt. Carol Ogrinc said. “One witness observed the vehicle driving erratically  and passing vehicles on Smith Ridge Road.”

According to police, a witness said the driver, Phillippe B. Patricio, 26, of Scuppo Road in Danbury, lost control after attempting to pass a Ferrari.  The witness told police Patricio had been traveling southbound in the northbound lane before she saw him “crash head on” into the stone wall. She told police she saw him running from the scene.

Upon investigation, police detected the odor of alcohol coming from the unoccupied vehicle, and saw an unopened beer bottle in the car.

Officers searched the area, and Patricio was spotted in the woods. He responded to an officer’s call to stop, and he was charged with reckless driving, evading responsibility and operating under the influence.

Patricio was taken to police headquarters, then transported to Norwalk Hospital after complaining of pain. He was returned to the New Canaan police department that same day. He did not post $2,500 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on March 14.

Police said approximately $2,000 damage was done to the stone wall.
