New Canaan Business Owner Reports Attempted IRS Fraud

New Canaan police received a fraud complaint from a local business owner after someone reportedly attempted to use their Federal Tax ID Number to receive a fraudulent tax return.

Police said they received the complaint on Wednesday, October 9, after the IRS notified he owner of the filing by an individual in Tennessee.

Police said the scheme is a common fraud occurrence and paperwork can be filled out on IRS.gov to reported fraudulent filings, at which point he federal office will handle the investigation.

Police had no further information on the suspect and said the Tennessee bank hat originally flagged the filing did not provide additional details from their end.
