New Canaan: Call Police If Your Pet Gets Out

A special message from NCPD Officer Mary Ann Kleinschmitt, whose animal control unit is reachable at 203-594-3510. Just hit play on the video.

Here's the first installment of a new weekly video feature with Officer Mary Ann Kleinschmitt. She's head of the New Canaan Police Department's animal control unit.

New Canaan is an animal-loving town, with a specialty shop for pet owners, local nonprofit organizations dedicated to rescue and its own dog park that draws people from all over the county.

We'll look for tips from Kleinschmitt, who has a unique perspective on such matters, for pet owners and other residents of the town. And we'll tag this series under the "Animal Reports" column with our other running tab on activity (scroll down) with Kleinschmitt and her team. Enjoy!

We keep our dogs inside ALL the time unless we take them to Vet. I would LOVE to be able to walk them and take them places like EVERYONE else is allowed to do but me. Nobody will help train my dogs or tell me what tag is for what for which dog. Very unforunate. Ummmm

Glen: You need each dog rabies vaccinated at your vet or Petco in Norwalk does the vaccination for half the price. Then you take the rabies certificate to Town Hall and pay a dog liscence fee for each dog and you get a dog tag for that. You can walk your dogs down the street on a leash and if they are agressive towards people and other dogs, just cross the street when you are being approached. Use a split lead that harnesses both dogs to one leash and pull back on the leash when the get agresive. avoid other people and dogs by crossing the street. Honestly I just think you are lazy and don't want to walk your dogs at all. Get off your butt and walk them. The reason they are out of controll is because of you! Nobody is going to walk your dogs for you for free, especially if they are agressive. Dog walkers when walking a customers dog are responsible for those dogs when walking them and if they bite or attack someone or another dog, the dog walker is responsible for damages. Anyone is stupid if they volunteer to walk your dogs and your dogs bite someone, the dog walker gets sued, not you. If you can't take care of your dogs then you shouldn't own dogs. SOUND ADVICE GLEN. Nobody want's the liability......
