Police arrested a 20-year-old New Canaan man late Thursday on drugs charges after finding a small amount of marijuana on him during a motor vehicle stop.
Matthew Harkins of Huckleberry Hill Road was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of marijuana.
According to police, Harkins was a passenger in a car that was stopped near the intersection of Old and New Norwalk Roads at 8:18 p.m. on Jan. 24 because the vehicle had a license plate frame around the rear plate (which is illegal).
Police smelled marijuana as they approached the car’s driver, said Sgt. Carol Ogrinc, public information officer for the New Canaan Police Department. The driver said there was no marijuana in the car but that the pair had been at a friend’s house where marijuana was smoked, Ogrinc said.
Harkins admitted that he had a small amount of marijuana on him, she said. He also had two prescription pills folded in a small cup that was not the original container, Ogrinc said.
Harkins was released after promising to appear Feb. 4 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
