In order to build and maintain a positive relationship between police officers and youths and teens, a resource officer is available at New Canaan High School to whom students can reach and connect with.
Officer Jason Kim, part of the New Canaan Police Department for the last six years, has been instated as the resource officer for this school year.
"He'll be helping there," said Sgt. Carol Ogrinc, "the number one job is to meet as many students and faculty and build a positive relationship. More officers used to live in the area and we used to have programs with more officers involved. Now, more officers live further away.
"There's an 'us vs. them' mentality with kids and that’s not how it should be. We wanted to build better relationships and I think we have. There is always room for improvement and I think it has been really successful," said Ogrinc.
Officer Kim will be available for any questions or concerns that students might have. The resource officer program has been in New Canaan since 2007.
