New Canaan Police Chief Ed Nadriczny to Retire

After 36 years of service, Nadriczny on Friday announced that he is planning to retire—just when is not clear.

Police Chief Edward Nadriczny on Friday announced that he intends to retire from the New Canaan Police Department after 36 years of service.

In a letter addressed to First Selctman Rob Mallozzi that was released to the press, Nadriczny—chief for the past eight years—said the decision to retire was difficult “as I consider the New Canaan Police Department and the New Canaan Community Part of my family.”

“I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to lead such an outstanding police department and for making sure we received the resources to keep our officers safe and well trained,” he said. “I can’t stress enough how much I enjoyed working with the community of New Canaan and all of the friends that I was able to make over the years.”

It isn’t clear just when the retirement will take hold. Nadriczny said he’ll work with the Police Commission and town to map out a timeline.

Chief of police through many high-profile emergency response events, including in the past three years alone the ice storm of March 2010, Tropical Storm Irene, “Snowtober” and Hurricane Sandy—as well as New Canaan’s first shooting death in 25 years—Nadriczny possesses “professionalism” and a strong “sense of community,” Mallozzi said.

“Suffice it to say, Ed has given his all to our Town and the Police Department,” Mallozzi said.

The FBI National Academy graduate’s accomplishments as chief include department accreditation, expansion of Animal Control, introduction of a motorcycle unit, re-instatement of a K-9 Patrol unit and school resource officer, Mallozzi said.

“I wish Ed all the best in his retirement,” Mallozzi said. “New Canaan was fortunate to have such a dedicated gentleman serve our community.”
