New Canaan Police Make 89 Stops During Crack Down on Distracted Drivers
New Canaan Police reportedly established patrols on some of the town's busiest streets and issued tickets for a variety of violations, including cell phone use while driving, speeding, following too close and failure to wear a seat belt.
About a month after a New Canaan teenager allegedly with her SUV, New Canaan Police reportedly made 89 motor vehicle stops on Wednesday as part of an overall effort to crack down on distracted drivers.
Police reportedly established patrols on some of the town's busiest streets — including Oenoke Ridge Road, Smith Ridge Road, New Norwalk Road, South Avenue, Old Stamford Road and Jelliff Mill Road — and issued tickets for a variety of violations, including , speeding, following too close and failure to wear a seat belt.
Police focused mostly on roads which have "increased rates of motor vehicle accidents or are locations where citizen complaints about traffic safety have occurred," according to a press release from Captain Leon Krolikowski.

In an emailed statement, Rob Mallozzi called the day of increased enforcement "an important undertaking" and added that he would encourage more such actions "as time and resources allow."
The release does not state how many infractions were issued.

Meanwhile the state Senate unanimously approved a bill on Wednesday that would , bicyclists, highway workers and others users of roads considered to be "vulnerable" on top of any existing criminal charges.
