New Canaan Police Warn of Phishing Scams After Pair of ID Thefts

New Canaan authorities are once again warning town residents to absolutely never give out personal information over the Internet or telephone when an unknown or untrusted source asks for it.

Sgt. Peter Condos issued the warning this week after two identity theft cases were reported to police by two separate New Canaan residents.

The first victim, a 54-year-old man who reported on January 7 turning over personal details online, was given an identity theft packet, which directs them to the appropriate agencies to monitor their financial information. The second case was reported January 11, though no report was taken.

"Do not give your information out to someone requesting it over the phone or internet," Condos said. He noted the cases were difficult for local authorities to pursue and again stressed caution when dealing with financial information in the digital realm.
