New Canaan Post Office Forced Out of Pine Street Location

By February, you won't be able to get your traditional mail services at the U.S. Postal Service's Pine Street location in New Canaan any longer. They're being forced to move.

According to Christine Dugas, the U.S. Postal Service Northeast Area Communications Program Specialist, the current lease holder signed a lease to a new tenant while the pair were in what she called "good faith" negotiations.

"We'll have to be out by January 31, 2014," Dugas said. "We're currently exploring all our options, for both short-term and long-term solutions. We just found out yesterday, so we're still in the 'reviewing it all' stage. We had been negotiating, mostly in good faith, but I suppose [the property owner] received an offer and liked it."

The Postal Service found out on Tuesday that the building would be leased to a new tenant. On Wednesday, there was a sign in the window advertising retail space at the location by broker Cushman & Wakefield.

Postal employees at the location itself declined to comment, but Dugas assured residents in town their service would not be impacted.

"We're currently looking at other retail spaces in New Canaan," she said. "We're obviously going to continue providing service for the customers of New Canaan."

So what do you think, New Canaan? Do you anticipate the post office moving physical locations will have a great impact on you?

Hey Hollywood, I see plenty of older homes and establishments around town. Should they also be torn down? I'm waiting to see a write up in the local paper about how generous you are in your contribution to the renovation of the post office.

it is unfortunate that the owner of the building is making the town post office which is very important to the residence of New Canaan and has been at this location for so long now having to move to another location in New Canaan if possible. the ideal location would be the building that Bank of America has in the Food Emporium parking lot. It doesn't get much use and is out of the main route of town to handle traffic. The other spot would be the empty Bank of America building on the corner of forest street and locust. We need a post office in New Canaan and shame on the landlord for making a mess of this for us residence.

Though no longer a resident, I grew up in New Canaan. Like Mary says, where the post office has been an integral part of our lives back then, it's a bit heartbreaking to see yet another town icon disappear to the ravages of time (notice I didn't say progress). I hope the PO finds a fitting new home.

What would be really cool is if Bank of America moved their Elm St. office to their old Forest St. branch and the Post Office went back into its ORIGINAL location on Elm where BofA is now. A dream, yes...but cool nonetheless.
