New Canaan Animal Control issued a public service announcement Monday following the discovery on Friday of the third rabies case in town inside of a month.
Officer Maryann Kleinschmitt said Monday all pets should always be up-to-date on their vaccination shots, but cats are more of a concern than dogs because cats are not required by law to be vaccinated.
"According to the state, cats can harbor rabies for up to six months," Kleinschmitt said. "If a cat is already vaccinated, there's a 45-day, in-home quarantine. If the cat is not vaccinated, they'll have to be quarantined for three months at a veterinary office and then three months in-home."
Kleinschmitt warned pet owners to keep their pats safe by making sure their vaccinations are up to date. She said a one-year vaccination is safest, but there is also a three-year vaccination available.
