New Canaan Residents Hit With Fraudulent Accounts

Residents received overdue account notices from fraudulent AT&T and Paypal accounts.

 

Police are investigating a South Avenue resident's complaint that an AT&T account was falsely opened in his name, police said. 

A collections representative contacted the 74-year-old man to inform him that an account in his name was overdue $191.31, said Sgt. Carol Ogrinc. The man reported the incident to New Canaan police on may 11, police said.

The fraudulent account, which was closed on March 16 due to non-payment, was opened with a West Palm Beach, Fla. address, police said. The man informed the collections representative that he had not been to Florida recently and that he does not know anyone there, said Ogrinc. 

The man was not held responsible for the $191.31, police said.

Police are investigating a Scofield Lane resident's complaint that a Paypal account was opened in her name and charged hundreds of dollars, police said. 

The 68-year-old woman reported to police on May 12 that she received a bill for $350.26 for a Paypal account that she never opened, said Sgt. Carol Ogrinc. 

The "Bill Me Later" account was opened using the woman's social security number, although, her name was misspelled, police said. 

The woman was not held responsible for the $350.26, police said.

Police are investigating a missing wallet reported at St. Mark's May Fair, police said. 

An indvidual approached a police officer at the May Fair on May 12 at 1:51 p.m. to report a stolen wallet, police said. 

Police are still compiling a report on the incident, said Sgt. Carol Ogrinc.
