New Canaan Sees 3rd Rabies Case Inside of a Month

New Canaan has received its third positive rabies case in less than a month after it was discovered Friday a raccoon that got into an altercation with a dog and possibly a cat in town was carrying the disease.

Tests for rabies returned positive Friday following the recovery of a raccoon on Thursday from 966 Ponus Ridge after the animal came into contact with a dog there, said Animal Control Officer Maryann Kleinschmitt. It's likely the dog was the reason for the raccoon's death, Kleinschmitt said.

A cat in the vicinity also possibly came into contact with the rabid raccoon as it was outside when the incident occurred. Both animals were given rabies booster shots. Neither needed to be quarantined as both were up-to-date on their shots.
