According to police, the sexual assault charge stems from the fact that the age of consent in Connecticut is 16.

"In this case, age played a factor," Sergeant Carol Ogrinc said Tuesday.

Police said the victim initially came forward and told police what happened, and because of her age, her parents got involved as well. A warrant was then obtained for Maisonette's arrest in early September.

Maisonette was released on $100,000 and given an Oct. 19 court date.

According to berecruited.com, Maisonette was a member of the Class of 2012 at New Canaan High School and was an athlete.
