New Canaan Woman, 53, Charged with Stealing Car

A New Canaan woman who had allegedly broken into a nearby Mill Port Avenue neighbor's home in December, took a number of clothing articles, then took the vehicle parked there and drove it to New York, has officially been charged by police in relation to the incident.

Elizabeth McMahon, 53, of Lakeview Avenue, was charged Thursday, January 2, 2014, with third-degree burglary and second-degree larceny following an investigation into the Dec. 2 incident, Sgt. Peter Condos said Monday.

Police managed to recover the stolen vehicle undamaged from McMahon after the woman's mother called Pelham, NY, authorities to inform them of her daughter's suspected instability. Pelham police relayed the information to New Canaan authorities, who picked her up in December as she returned to town.

Condos said her arrest in January comes with the hopes from prosecutors that they will be able to more carefully manage psychiatric treatment for the woman, an Avalon Apartments resident. McMahon was released on a written Promise to Appear and issued a court date of January 14.
