New Canaan Woman, 68, Charged with DUI

A 68-year-old New Canaan woman was driving --extremely slow -- under the influence of alcohol at about 12:45 p.m. Sunday, police said.

New Canaan police gave this account (which is an accusation not proven in court) of the incident:

A police officer patrolling in the area of Route 123 saw vehicles in the opposite lane traveling slow, and he saw one vehicle pass another in a no-passing zone.

The officer turned around and stopped the vehicle, but the driver said he had passed the car in front of him because it had been traveling extremely slow and weaving from side to side.

The officer then dropped the idea of ticketing the driver he was with and left to find the other vehicle.

He found that vehicle and stopped it on Parade Hill Road near its intersection with Heritage Hill Road.

When the car stopped for the officer, it was in the roadway, not off to the side. The officer directed the driver to park the car on the roadside.

The officer could smell alcohol when he spoke with the driver, Evelyn S. Farrell, 68, of Cheese Spring Road.

Farrell was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and released on a promise to appear June 7 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
