New Canaan Woman Charged with DWI, Found Driving without a Tire

A New Canaan woman was charge with a DWI after police sad they found her smelling of alcohol and driving her vehicle sans one whole tire.

According to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc, an officer on patrol on Saturday, Nov. 9 at approximately 12:39 a.m. spotted a vehicle pulled off to the side of Old Stamford Road near Old Studio Road heading in the opposite direction and heard loud noises coming from the vehicle.

Ogrinc said the officer conducted a U-turn and found the vehicle in motion again, listing to the passenger's side as it traveled. He conducted a motor vehicle stop and found the driver, identified as Cynthia Z. Charas, 49, of 329 Laurel Road, displaying signs of intoxication she said.

The officer detected the odor of alcohol and Charas was slurring her words, according to Ogrinc. The officer noted there was damage to Charas' rear bumper, which was hanging off the car, and the right passenger's side tire was completely gone, with Charas operating the vehicle on a deformed rim, Ogrinc said.

Charas failed field sobriety tests and was taken into custody, charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and traveling on an unsafe tire. She posted a $250 bond and was scheduled to appear in court Nov. 22, 2013.
