New Canaan Woman Charged With Stealing From Elderly Darien Man

Darien Police arrested a New Canaan woman Sunday after she allegedly stole hundreds of dollars from an elderly Darien resident she was friendly with.

Kim Barker, 58, was charged with second degree larceny and interfering with an officer. She was released after posting $500 bond and is set to appear in court April 27.

Darien Police Capt. Fred Komm said that Barker, who had befriended a 91-year-old resident of Tokeneke Trail, recently began to arouse the suspicions of the man's health aide.

According to Komm, the woman believed Barker had been stealing or fraudulently obtaining money from the man "for some time" and took it upon herself to "monitor her activities."

On Sunday, the aide allegedly witnessed Barker go into the man's safe and remove $510 dollars, which he later told police she did not have permission to take. The aide contacted police, who arrived shortly at the residence.

When confronted, Komm said Barker was "enraged and combative" and had to be forcibly handcuffed before being taken in for processing.
