NC Woman's Long Weekend: 2 Ruckuses & Victim of Mischief

Memorial Day weekend was (if you include Thursday night) a long and eventful one for a New Canaan woman who, according to police reports, was arrested twice and, while she was in jail, her home apparently was entered and ransacked.

New Canaan police gave this account (an accusation -- of which nothing has been proven in court):

Thursday, 10:42 p.m.

A 67-year-old man living on Knapp Lane called police to tell them an ex-girlfriend was loudly disruptive outside his home and wouldn't leave after he'd repeatedly told her to do so.

Jane H. Delano, 55, of Elm Street, was intoxicated and banging on the windows, yelling to the man to let her in. As police were taking her into custody, she dropped to her knees and resisted being handcuffed.

Police charged her with third-degree criminal trespassing, disorderly conduct and interfering with a police officer. She was released after posting a $1,000 bond.

Saturday, 9:23 p.m.

A manager at Sole restaurant, 105 Elm St., called police to report that an intoxicated woman was causing a disturbance and refusing to leave. Other diners at the restaurant were leaving because of her behavior.

When police arrived, they saw she was loud, belligerent and swearing. As officers took her into custody, she refused to put her hands behind her back. She also slapped at an officer's hands and arms.

Delano was charged with second-degree breach of peace and interferring with an officer. She was held on $5,000 bond and was scheduled to appear Tuesday in state Superior Court in Norwalk.

Sunday, 9:30 a.m.

A neighbor of Delano's told police that the front door of her Elm Street home was wide open with some items piled up near it and others scattered around.

Delano, who did not make bail, was still in a New Canaan Police Department jail cell at the time, and nobody was at her home. The front door and screen door had been open when she departed from her home, she told police, but the house was immaculate when she left.

Nothing in the home appeared to be damaged and items of value were still in place, but clothing and other possessions were scattered around the doorway and various rooms looked as if they had been ransacked.
