Norwalk Man Charged with Speeding, DWI in New Canaan

Police this week reported the arrest of a Norwalk man in New Canaan on drunk driving charges after he was stopped for allegedly speeding.

According to Sgt. Peter Condos, an officer on patrol in the area of Smith Ridge Road in the area of Strawberry Hill Road conducted a motor vehicle stop for excessive speed and approached the vehicle.

It was then that the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol and noticed the operator, identified as Charles Eckert, 57, of 12 Devon Avenue in Norwalk, had glassy eyes and was slurring his speech, Condos said.

Eckert failed the field sobriety tests and additionally failed a portable breathalyzer test, Condos said, allegedly blowing a .118.

He was taken into custody without incident and charged with traveling at an unreasonable speed and driving while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs before posting a $250 bond. Eckart was issued a court date of Dec. 10, 2013.
