Norwalk Pickup Truck Strikes & Injures New Canaan DPW Worker

The victim, New Canaan DPW employee Benjamin Olmstead of Norwalk, 71, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Norwalk Hospital.

A 60-year-old Norwalk man driving onto East Avenue in New Canaan late Wednesday morning struck and injured a 71-year-old New Canaan Department of Public Works employee who was marking the road with spray paint, New Canaan police said.

Police gave this account of the incident:

The victim, Benjamin Olmstead of Norwalk, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Norwalk Hospital by New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps.

Police were called to the scene — at the intersection of New Norwalk Road (Rt. 123) and East Avenue — at about 11:20 a.m.

The vehicle, a pickup truck, was traveling north on New Norwalk Road, and the driver was trying to turn left onto East Avenue when the man was struck.

The driver, and the only person in the vehicle, is Francesco Sorge, 60, also of Norwalk. He immediately stopped and stayed at the scene.

An accident reconstruction team with police officers from both New Canaan and Wilton is investigating the accident.
