A dog that had been running off-leash in Lakeview Cemetery when it ran into the road and was struck by a passing police cruiser, is back home safe and sound, officials say.
The incident occurred last Wednesday where Avalon Drive West comes into Lakeview Avenue—just across the street from a wide gate entrance to the cemetery.
The dog that was hit, a black Labrador retriever, had been running across the road with a corgi, and the lab ran off after the accident, according to Officer Mary Ann Kleinschmitt of the New Canaan Police Department. The corgi was scooped up by police.
“We started knocking on doors and found the owner [of both dogs] in Avalon,” Kleinschmitt said.
Turns out the lab had simply run home after it was hit, she said. The dog was brought to a vet and found to have had no broken bones.
“It had a scratch on its legs where it probably clipped the bumper,” Kleinschmitt said. “The dog is fine, and the owner licensed both dogs. All is well that ends well.”
