Pets Banned from New Canaan's Lakeview Cemetery

The New Canaan Lakeview Cemetery is dealing with an issue currently in collaboration with the Police and Animal Control Departments currently that has led to the banning of all pets from the grounds.

According to AC Officer Mary Ann Kleinschmitt, notices have been posted warning visitors of the new, stricter pet regulations after pet owners continually allowed animals to relieve themselves on the headstones and grave sites on the grounds without ever picking up after the fact.

Kleinschmitt said the department would be watching for residents who weren't abiding by the new pet ban and issuing tickets, possibly even for trespassing if the situation warranted further charges.

The geese are are the problem

I have lived in New Canaan since May 2013 and walked my dog twice daily in the field adjacent to the cemetery. It was a perfect spot, popular with other dog owners and I always picked up my dogs poop. I agree with Hollywood2 that the real problem was with the geese who relieve themselves everywhere, including within the cemetery. It really saddens me that dog owners were walking through the cemetery, and some were not picking up. I hope as a responsible dog owner we are able to appeal to use the field only?
