Police: Alert Conductor Foils Bike Theft at RR Station

Metropolitan Transportation Authority police apprehended a man trying to steal a bicycle at the New Canaan railroad station, town police said.

New Canaan police gave this account of the incident:

At 9:38 a.m. on Tuesday, July 9, a Metro North conductor in a train that had just called New Canaan police to tell them he had just seen a man cut a lock off a bicycle parked at the station.

The thief them brought the bike on the train, the railroad employee said. When the conductor confronted the man, the thief fled, but surveillance photos reviewed by MTA police allowed them to identify the man by Friday.

MTA police, who took over the investigation from New Canaan police because MTA police have jurisdiction on trains and stations, expect to apply for an arrest warrant for the man, who is suspected of committing thefts in Stamford, White Plains and possibly elsewhere.

The New Canaan bike that was almost stolen is a men's "Rock Hopper" silver and blue colored aluminum bicycle with an estimated value of $800.
