Police Blotter: A String of Burglaries, Narcotics, Identity Theft & More

Police responded to several calls in the past week, most notably were a string of possibly related burglaries.

Pot in a Parking Lot: On July 26 at 1:09 a.m., an officer noticed two cars parked in the St. Marks Church parking lot on Oenoke Ridge Road. The officer noticed the guts of a cigar outside one of the vehicles. Cigars, or blunts, are often hollowed out and filled with marijuana. Upon further inspection, the officer found one of the drivers, 20-year-old Kevin Johnson, a resident of Main Street, to be in possession of less than four ounces of marijuana. Johnson was released at the scene on promise to appear in court on August 5.

CL&P Identity Theft: On the afternoon of July 19, police responded to a call from a South Avenue resident complaining of an identity theft. The 40-year-old resident told police she had received an $820 bill in March 2010 from Connecticut Light & Power registered to an address in Hartford. The only problem was she had no connections to Hartford and certainly doesn't own a house there. There are no leads in the case and the resident is not responsible for the charges.

String of Possibly Related Burglaries:

Police believe the following four complaints could all be related. Police are limiting the details they release on the cases until further investigations are completed:

  • Police responded to an alarm on July 24 at 9:34 p.m. on Old Norwalk Road. Upon arriving at the scene, police found a screen had been removed from a window and the window was damaged where it had been forced open. The residents had left their house at approximately 7:15 p.m. that evening. Investigators are unsure if anyone had gained entry to the home, nothing has been reported missing.
  • Later that evening at 10:04 p.m., police responded to an attempted burglary on Ludlow Road. A window had been forced slightly open, causing damage tot he window frame. Police do not believe anyone entered the home. The 49-year-old resident had been gone since the previous morning. Nothing has been reported missing.
  • On July 24 at 10:40 p.m., police responded to another tripped house alarm on Norholt Drive. Upon checking the house, officers noticed a door was forced open. Police are unsure if the intruders entered the home as nothing has been reported missing.
  • While officers were responding to the alarm on Norholt Drive, they received another call at 11 p.m. from a resident in the vicinity of Summersweet Lane. The complainant said someone rang her doorbell and when she peered through her window she observed a white male standing at her door and another man hiding in her bushes.

Police believe the burglars are targeting dark residences that appear vacant and advise residents to inform their neighbors of any trips they may be taking as well as what workers may be expected at the house during your trip. Vacationers have the option of calling the police station at 203-594-3500 and putting themselves on the "Closed House List," which allows police to keep tabs on homes that are empty for prolonged periods.
