According to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department, December is traditionally the high yearly mark for larceny and burglary. Proving the point, in this week's Police Blotter, larceny leads the list.

At  on Dec. 12 at about 1pm, a 64-year-old female told police in a report filed the next day, a clear plastic bag containing jewelry was stolen. The complainant reported that she was in the store purchasing candy. She filled a bag and walked over to place it on the counter, leaving her jewelry near the "penny candy" containers. When she returned, she told police, her bag was gone. According to the report, the woman told police the bag contained two rings: an emerald and diamond ring set in platinum and another set with a tanzanite stone and diamonds set in white gold estimated at a total value of $23,000.

A 54-year-old resident of Harrison Ave. called police on Dec. 16 to report that she was missing four pieces of jewelry from her home. The woman told police that she had seen a television report the night before about a woman arrested in Fairfield for stealing jewelry from a home. She recognized her as a distant relative who had been at her home for a family funeral on Nov. 18. Prompted to check her own belongings, she told police that she found she was missing four pieces of jewelry valued at slightly more than $600 total.

Inside Job

When a 47-year-old female Ponus Ridge Rd. resident began to notice items missing from her home over the past month, she reported to police on Dec. 16 that the loss of household items, primarily clothing, a handbag and ring, coincided with a housekeeper's presence in the home. The estimated loss was about $1000 and the items were later returned. Vilma Y. Guevara of Bridgeport was subsequently charged with sixth degree larceny, with a bond of $1000. She has a court date of Dec. 28.

Package Taken from Mailbox

A package, which a 57-year-old resident saw in her mailbox at about 3pm on Dec. 15 was not there when she returned from errands and went to retrieve it at about 3:45pm, she reported to police. She later learned the package contained a CD and gift cards estimated at a total value of $135.

Cell Phone Memory Card Vanishes from YMCA

A 24-year-old New Canaan resident reported to police on Dec. 14 that he had been working out at the on Dec. 8 between 5:30pm and 7:30pm. He told police he left his cell phone along with other items, near an exercise machine. When he returned to get his belongings, his cell phone was missing. The police report said that his phone was returned to the main desk, but he later discovered the phone's memory card was missing.

Family Dispute

Police were called to a residence on Farm Rd. by a 47-year-old female who had a protective order against her husband, stemming from a previous incident. When the husband, 40-years-old, threw a glass on the floor, she told police, she decided to report the incident. The husband was charged with disorderly conduct and criminal violation of a protective order.
