Police: Girl, 16, Hits Car, Drives off, Gets Busted

A 16-year-old girl isn't supposed to be driving with friends in the car just after she gets her license, and she isn't supposed to leave the scene of an accident she caused, according to New Canaan police.

A man standing on the sidewalk near Elm Restaurant on Elm Street saw a car driven by a 16-year-old girl damage another vehicle as the new driver tried to park, New Canaan police said.

The man spoke with the driver to make sure she and her passengers were all right, then he went in the restaurant to see if he could find the owner of the damaged car, police said.

Police say that as he was entering the restaurant, the girl drove off -- but that didn't work out well for her because he had taken the trouble to note her license plate number, which he gave to police when he called them.

New Canaan police gave this account (an accusation not proven in court) of the matter:

Police soon checked records and found out who the owner of the vehicle was -- one of the parents of the girl. That evening, she showed up at the police station and admitted hitting the car -- a 2013 BMW -- with her 2005 Ford.

The accident caused damage to her vehicle's front bumper and to the left rear fender of the BMW. That led to a charge of improper parking.

She also admitted that she was driving with other teenagers in the car. That led to a charge of violating a state law forbidding teenage drivers from doing that for the first few months after they get a license. She also admitted leaving the scene, which resulted in a charge of evading responsibility.

She was released on a $50 bond and is scheduled to appear in state Superior Court in Norwalk on March 12.
