Police: Half-Dozen New Canaan Youths Found Drunk at Dance

Six youths were sent home or transported to the hospital from a freshman/sophomore dance at the Outback Teen Center in New Canaan Friday after displaying signs of intoxication, police announce Monday.

According to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc, the first call was received at 8:37 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 25, when a 15-year-old male New Canaan boy was waiting in line to enter the dance and threw up on the floor just inside the establishment. An ambulance transported the teen to the hospital and his parents were contacted.

A 17-year-old was then observed and suspected of being under the influence of alcohol. Center officials have access to a portable intoxilyzer at the center and have been trained in its use. They conducted a breathalyzer test on the boy and found he had alcohol in his system, Ogrinc said. His parents were contacted to take the boy home.

A girl and three other unidentified youths were also then found to be under the influence of alcohol through use of the portable intoxilyzer. All were checked by EMTs on scene and released into the custody of a parent or relative, Ogrinc said.

"Those are a few that will taint the whole evening and give the event a bad name," Ogrinc said, noting there's often upwards of 200 kids in attendance to a center gathering. "[The center workers] are doing a good job, they're putting so much effort into giving kids a safe place to have fun. It's a lot of work and it's very stressful. A lot of the adults working there are really concerned [for the well-being of the kids.]"
