Police Issue First Citations in Safe Bus Operation

Police are making school bus safety a top priority.

New Canaan Police issued infractions to two drivers in recent weeks for passing stopped school buses. Police stepped up enforcement of illegal passing in December, placing officers on school buses and trailing buses in unmarked cars.

Police pulled over a Stamford man on Dec. 11, 2009 for passing a bus picking up children in the area of Old Stamford Road and Talmadge Hill Road. A Greenwich woman was stopped for passing a bus in the area of South Avenue and Farm Road on Jan. 5, 2010. Both were issued a $460 ticket.

The Police Department is planning increased enforcement of school bus passing rules throughout the academic year. Officers are following a zero tolerance policy regarding violations.
