Police: Man, 35, Tries to Get Refund, $73, for Gumless Nicorette Box

New Canaan police say a town man brought in a box of Nicorette gum with paper in it in place of the gum.

A manager at Walgreens, suspicious at how light the Nicorette box was when he held it, looked inside and found the item that a New Canaan man was returning for a refund was filled with paper, not gum, town police said.

The manager stalled the customer and called New Canaan police, according to a police report. Here's the rest of what police related in their account (an accusation not proven in court):

The manager called police at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, telling them that the customer was still in the store.

When police arrived they spoke with the customer, Justin Brunco of 74 Forest St. Brunco said he didn't know the box was empty.

Brunco was charged with criminal attempt at sixth-degree larceny and was issued a misdemeanor summons to appear May 12 in state Superior Court in Norwalk. The summons has no bond attached to it.
