The 76-year-old employee told police she noticed a round, crystal container with a silver top (valued at an estimated $200) was missing and confronted Mitchell outside the store under the suspicion that Mitchell had taken it, said Ogrinc.

Mitchell admitted to taking the crystal container and returned it to the employee, who then contacted New Canaan police, followed Mitchell to her parked car, then remained there until police arrived, said Ogrinc.

Upon arrival, police saw multiple bags in plain view in the front of the vehicle belonging to Mitchell, who consented to a search of the car, police said.

Police found several items of clothing, a silver platter and multiple small plates, said Ogrinc.

Mitchell initially told police she had purchased the items and that they were in her car so that she could return them, but then later admitted to stealing the items, said Ogrinc.

Mitchell was taken to the police station, charged with sixth-degree larceny and released on the promise to appear at her August 27 court date, police said.

According to Ogrinc, the items were possibly taken earlier in the week from stores in White Plains, NY.
