[UPDATE] Small Black Bear Spotted in New Canaan

Do not approach the bear and bring the pets inside.

[UPDATE] 12:43 p.m. The black bear was last seen meandering into the woods behind New Canaan Country Club.

"We just want to advise residents to keep their dogs inside in that area because a dog will approach a bear, but a dog will not survive a bear attack," said Animal Control Officer Maryann Kleinschmitt.

As the bear has show no signs of aggression, DEEP will not take any action, said Kleinschmitt. The country club was also notified.

"As long is he keeps moving along, everything will be fine. He'll make his way to New York and we'll just leave him alone," said Kleinschmitt.

Original story:

On Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at approximately 11 a.m., a small black bear was spotted in the Smith Ridge Road/Country Club Road area. The bear is moving through the area.

Residents should not approach the bear and should bring domestic animals inside.

If the bear is spotted please call (203) 594-3500.

Patch makes extensive use of stock photographs. That is not a small bear, that is a stock photo of a full grown male bear. He would make an hors d'hoevre of your Poodle and a snack out of your Rottweiler.

And remember, if you want your own bear, please use a reputable bear rescue. Bears purchased from pet stores only lead to the continued existence of bear mills - particularly in the south and in Amish country.

I thought it wise not to track down the bear for photographs and make an hors d'hoevre of myself.
Emily Constance (Editor) July 24, 2012 at 09:40 PM
Agreed. Bears seem pretty cute from far away, but they are indeed wild animals.

Always run DOWN hill if being chased by a bear...not uphill....haha

:You cannot outrun a mature bear or outclimb it up a tree. Google black bear attack or similar and make sure you know what to do. Black bears are pretty smart and usually try to avoid humans.

E.C. -- would have at least been more honest to say in original story that pic of bear was not actual one ... but probably/maybe similar? Is the bear a Democrat or Republican?
Y'voddre Jones July 25, 2012 at 12:36 AM
Who had a copy of the bear's itinerary or passport that read "New York bound"???

Whatever happened to the 3 Bears Restaurant? Great hangout for Bears. Hard to believe Georgetown Saloon closed

With Zira in rehab, the bear knew it was safe to show up in NC.

You guys belong on Letterman. Oops, he's retired. Let's go over there for breakfast--he might be getting lonely about now.

Stock photos are commonly used [to remind forgetful people of how cute bears are as one's dogs and cats are being eaten by one]. The photo creates interest in the story. Did you think Emily caught up with the bear that NCPD and Animal Control couldn't find and said, "Say 'Cheese!.'" There is no deception involved, but read the fine print, if any....
