The Accident Report: Pedestrian Struck and Other Scrapes

New Canaan Police logged half a dozen accidents in the past week.

Pedestrian Struck in Crosswalk:

An 83-year-old Florida driver knocked down a 68-year-old pedestrian in the crosswalk across Richmond Hill while trying to make a left turn from Park Street around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30. The driver, who said he didn't see the pedestrian because he was wearing dark clothing, was issued an infraction for failing to grant the pedestrian right of way. Police reported that the pedestrian, a New Canaan resident, was wearing tan pants and a green jacket. The 68-year-old was transported to Norwalk Hospital with pain in his left elbow and left ankle after being struck.

Parties Involved Report Collision:


Two women reported at 4:16 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, at police headquarters that they had earlier been involved in a minor accident on Maple Street. One of the women, age 48, complained that the other had struck her vehicle while pulling out of an "improper" parking space. The other woman, a 39-year-old New Canaan resident, was issued a verbal warning for unsafe movement from a stopped position.

Pine Street Lot Scrape:

A 69-year-old male from New Canaan scraped a vehicle parked legally in the lot at the corner of Pine and Park Streets Thursday, April 1, around 2:30 p.m. The New Canaan resident said another vehicle was exiting the lot at the same time when he tried to squeak by, caused the accident. Police took no action in the matter.

Collision with Parked Car Witnessed:

A woman called police around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, April 1, after watching a car back out a driveway on White Birch Road and into a vehicle she had parked along the road causing minor damage. While the complainant was speaking with an officer, the offending driver circled back to White Birch Road. The 50-year-old New Canaan woman said she hadn't realized she'd struck something, as she had the radio on and a dog in the car. The officer gave her a verbal warning for unsafe backing.

Child Check Results in Rear-Ender:

A 38-year-old Shelton man rear-ended the vehicle in front of him when he turned around in the driver's seat to check on his child in the back while driving north on Main Street around 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 3. The driver of the other vehicle, a 65-year-old New Canaan man, had stopped while attempting to turn left onto St. John's Place. Police issued a verbal warning for following too closely to the Shelton man, whose vehicle sustained minor damage to the front bumper. The New Canaanite's vehicle sustained heavy damage.

Taxi Driver Blamed for Crash at Dueling Greens:

A 52-year-old taxi driver collided with a vehicle in the Elm Street intersection while exiting the New Canaan Station lot onto Park Street shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday, April 3. The cabbie said he had proceeded into the intersection when the light turned green trying to make a left onto Park. The 72-year-old New Canaan resident driving the other vehicle said she too had proceeded forward when the traffic signal changed. Police gave the taxi driver a written warning for failure to yield while making a left turn.
