Three Identity Theft Reports Last Week in New Canaan

New Canaan police received these three separate, apparently unrelated reports of identity theft last week:

On April 9, a 60-year-old New Canaan woman reported finding a fraudulent charge on a credit card she still has: $669.99 from a Best Buy store (police didn't know whether it's the one in Norwalk) made on March 24 to buy an Apple iPad.

The next day, a woman on Hemlock Hill Road told police that a bank had called to request payment for a cash advance on her credit card. Except that she doesn't have a credit card or an account with that bank.

Someone pretending to be her apparently took out a cash advance of $2,000 from the credit card earlier this year. Police said the woman is not responsible for the payment, and fraud investigators from the bank are looking into the matter.

The day after that, on April 11, a 47-year-old resident of Heritage Hill Road told police that her credit card company had told her of some possible fraudulent charges from her account.

She looked at the details and confirmed that they were fraudulent. On April 10 and 11, someone charged to her credit card twice. On one day, it was charged a total of $401.88 for two Moneygrams, purchased at a CVS pharmacy in Stamford (police did not have information on which CVS pharmacy).

On another day, someone tried to buy $644.83 worth of items at Bloomingdale's in White Plains, but for some reason the transaction was stopped. Police say the matter is under investigation.
