Weather Made a Mess

Trees and power lines are down.

Driving rain and gusting winds downed trees and wires all over town Monday, causing power outages, interrupting commuter rail service, and prompting road closures, even blowing the American flag off the pole in front of Town Hall.

Four roads in New Canaan were closed due to downed trees and hanging wires. New Canaan Police have activated the Emergency Operations Center to help coordinate the response and CERT volunteers are helping to direct traffic around the following road closures:

  • Oenoke Lane is closed at Oenoke Ridge Road due to a tree and wires down.
  • Wahackme Road is closed from Weed Street to Bridle Path Lane due to a large tree hanging on wires near the road.
  • South Bald Hill Road is closed near North Wilton Road due to a large limb hanging on wires over the roadway.
  • Hawks Hill Road is closed due to a tree that fell across the roadway.

Meanwhile, Metro-North started busing New Canaan Branch riders after the 10:57 train out of Stamford Monday morning got caught up in wires brought down by a fallen tree near the Stamford Station. The trains were back on track as of 5:15 p.m.

By 9 p.m. just a handful of Connecticut Light and Power customers in New Canaan were without service, but the power had been out at as many as 200 homes in town earlier in the day.

And although the weather was not a factor in the fire at the Comina home furnishings shop on Main Street (aside from soaking the firefighters), the wind did rip a powerline from a house on Weed Street sparking a small electrical fire there around 2:15 p.m. that firefighters quickly extinguished.
