West Haven Councilman, Charged with New Canaan Theft, Wants Jury Trial

New Canaan police say a West Haven City Council member who worked at the Chase Bank branch in town stole $172,000 from two bank accounts. Now he wants a trial.

A West Haven city councilman charged with embezzling $172,000 from two accounts at Chase Bank in New Canaan, has asked for a jury trial in state Superior Court in Stamford, the New Haven Register reports.

Councilman Stephen W. DeCrescenzo, a Democrat elected to an at-large seat on the council, rejected offers for plea deals on Thursday, according to the newspaper. He continues to serve on the City Council and indicated he'll be attending the council's meeting on Monday.

New Canaan police accused DeCrescenzo, who worked at the New Canaan branch of the bank, of transferring the money from two accounts into a third, and then withdrawing it — all without authorization from the account holders.
