Crime & Safety

When Should I Dial 911?

Fire Marshal Fred Baker says you can never be too safe. If you've got a concern, call.

Most people hesitate to call 911 "because they don't want to bother the Police/Fire Department/Ambulance..." when in fact that is exactly what they should do.  Over and over we receive calls on our routine lines from people saying "I have a little fire can you send a little truck?  And please don't make any noise".  Ok, maybe not those words exactly, but very close.

The best answer is that if you think you have a problem that may necessitate response from one of the emergency services, let the dispatcher be the judge.  In most cases you are going to be correct.  Once you dial, stay on the line until the dispatcher has completed his/her inquiry.  Depending on the type of call – police, fire or medical – you may be transferred to a different dispatcher.

Another important reason to use 911 is that the caller ID displays the name and address of the caller (assuming landline) which is critical in helping get help to the proper location.
