Earl Stays on Eastward Course

Friday after school activities have been cancelled, and the Emergency Preparedness team continues to monitor the storm's progress.

Unpredictable is the watchword for hurricanes, but the latest information from the National Weather Service is that the worst weather appears to be heading to our east--to southeastern Conn. and the Mass. islands.

New Canaan's Emergency Preparedness team continues to monitor the storm and will alert residents if a change occurs. School Supt. David Abbey has cancelled all after school activities for Friday afternoon.

The National Weather Service said towns along the Conn. coast from the New Haven area to Stonington can expect tropical storm conditions late Friday afternoon and evening.

The most likely times for tropical storm conditions are between 4:00 p.m. and midnight, with the highest winds between 7:00-10:00p.m.

Heavy rainfall and One to three inches of heavy rainfall may cause some urban flooding in southeastern Conn.  In addition, large waves can be expected in Long Island Sound and across the exposed beaches of southeastern Conn.

The National Hurricane Center said that Hurricane Earl is expected to pass very close to Nantucket and Cape Cod as a Category I hurricane Friday evening around 11:00 p.m.
