Earl's Eastward Track is Good News for New Canaan

Nantucket, the Vineyard and Cape may not be so lucky.

If Earl continues on its current path Connecticut will be spared, but the islands off Massachusetts' coast may not be so lucky.

"I don't see New Canaan being impacted, except showers and thunderstorms," the town's Director of Emergency Preparedness, Dave Jonker said. "It could get a little breezy, but nothing of any more significance than a rainstorm."

It's another story for people and property in Eastern Massachusetts, where many New Canaan residents spend their summer. "You have to be worried if you're on the Cape or the Vineyard or Nantucket. That's going to be big.  They're close to sea level and it's forecast to hit as a Category 2 hurricane," Jonker said.

Jonker and his emergency preparedness team will continue to monitor the situation and make adjustments, if necessary. "Hurricanes are erratic," he said.

The town has put a banner at the top of its homepage, asking residents to sign up for the Emergency Call Out System. "We're asking everyone to register, and to give us as many contact points as they have," Jonker said.
