Malloy: 42 Workers Guilty of Post-Irene Disaster Aid Fraud

Over 200 more applications will be reviewed as the investigation continues.

Gov. Dannel Malloy provided an update this week of his administration's investigation into , according to a statement released by his office.

As of Monday, 42 workers have been found guilty, 685 have been cleared of any charges, 86 are in various stages of review and 240 applications will face review in the near future. The investigation has led to 27 dismissals and five resignations in addition to 10 individuals who opted to retire rather than going forward with an administrative hearing.

“When we announced this investigation, we said that allegations of fraud by state employees would not be tolerated,” Malloy said in the statement. “While this is certainly not something anyone should take joy in, the people of Connecticut should know we are serious about running a government that honestly serves them.”

Malloy that auditors would be hired to investigate whether state workers fraudulently received federal emergency money to replace spoiled food after Tropical Storm Irene. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service approved $13 million in replacement benefits for residents enrolled in the federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The state workers in question wouldn't qualify for this program because of the amount of income they receive.
