Mallozzi Issues Further Comments on New Canaan Town Hall Unionization

Two days after 34 New Canaan Town Hall employees joined the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) union, First Selectman Robert Mallozzi III issued additional statements on the development.

On Monday, following a close vote six years after the idea was initially voted down, Town Hall employees took a second vote and passed 19 votes to 15 votes a decision to join Council 4. On Wednesday, Mallozzi issued further comment on the unionization:

"I am a bit perplexed by the motivations behind the 19 members of our Town Hall staff who voted favorably for Union representation this week. I note that these employees presently work under the following conditions—far more generous than myself and all of my peer group ever experienced in the work force:

  • Highly competitive wages
  • 35 hour work week
  • 1 hour lunch
  • Personal days
  • Sick days
  • 11 paid holidays
  • Flex hours
  • Annual raises
  • After 6 months on the job, “Just Cause” employment, not “At Will” employment.
  • 69.9 % of H.S.A paid by New Canaan taxpayers
  • Subsidized health insurance
  • Town administered and supported Pension or 401 plans.  (That’s right, a Pension Plan)
I have been in office for 2 years and it is true that I expect much from our Town employees; I was elected because that was what is expected of me by the taxpayers. A vast majority of our employees deliver on those expectations. Those that don’t may feel being represented by a Union could be helpful to them. Perhaps that is the motivation? Time will tell."

The language sent to the Town of New Canaan by the Board of Labor Relations stipulating all of the job titles covered under the unionization is listed below:

"All Town of New Canaan employees working twenty (20) or more hours per week, employees in the following positions: Accountant*, Municipal Financial Analyst, Accounts Payable/Receivable Technician, Technology Specialist, Assistant Town Clerk, Tax Clerk ll, Assessment Technician, Assistant Assessor, Parking Enforcement Officer, Assistant Zoning Enforcement Officer, Administrative Assistant, Sanitarian*, System Administrative/Administrative Assistant, Property Management Clerk, Records Clerk, Maintenance Police Department, Assistant Building Inspector, Deputy Building Official, Engineer*, Maintenance Buildings, Office Manager, Program Director, Youth Family Service Specialist, Human Services Program Assistant, Senior Outreach Worker, excluding Administrative Assistants to Police Chief and First Selectman, Pension Coordinator, Payroll and Benefits Coordinator, Supervisors, Department Heads and all others excluded by MERA."
