More New Canaan Residents Using Web for Program Registration

The recreation department says it now sees about 60 percent of its revenue come through credit card use—nearly all of it online.

Nearly 70 percent of the New Canaan Recreation Department’s revenue is coming from online registrations—a testament to the increasing reach of technology for town services, officials say.

Recreation Director Steve Benko said that more than $450,000 of the $580,000 the department took in last year is from credit cards—nearly all of them used online.

“It’s huge,” Benko said of the change to Web registration.

The department uses “RecTrac” software for its programs and is seeking to purchase extra licenses to accommodate growing demand.

“I think it’s great,” Benko said. “It’s just easier for people to find out what programs there are online and then sign up.”

Many residents are required to visit the department in person because photos are needed for some services—a pool pass or tennis pass, for example, Benko said.
