New Canaan Playhouse to Get New Seats, Window Display

The Town Council Wednesday evening approved $85,000 in renovations and upgrades to the Playhouse.

Say goodbye to those creaky, uncomfortable seats in the New Canaan Playhouse. The Town Council Wednesday evening approved a $45,000 expenditure to bring in refurbished seats, complete with cup holders, from theaters in Hartford and Stamford.

"The seats will be reconditioned," said First Selectman Jeb Walker who attended Wednesday's meeting. "We're refurbishing [the seats] and installing them at a third of the price it would've cost to replace the seats."

But the seats aren't the only thing getting upgrades. The theatre's bathroom, which is not complaint with the American with Disabilities Act, will be getting a $20,000 repair to make it ADA friendly.

The front window of the theatre, which is currently painted over, will also be getting a $20,000 facelift. The town hopes to construct a display case in the window for flyers, trophies and other neighborhood announcements.

The New Canaan Playhouse is partially owned by the town. Repairs to the theatre are expected to begin in September.
