Nick Williams Running for Selectman

The Board of Education Chair announced his candidacy for the Republican Selectman seat.

Nick Williams announced Thursday that he is a candidate for the Republican nomination for Selectman.

Williams currently serves as the Chairman of the New Canaan Board of Education. He was first elected to the Board in 2007, and served one year as vice chairman, before being elected to his current position in 2009.

"I care deeply about our town," Mr. Williams said in a press release. "This is an important leadership role and an important election, and I feel that my background and abilities make me particularly suited for the job."

Williams is a corporate attorney with Clifford Chance, in New York. “"My job is negotiating deals," he said. "The vast majority of our town's budget is related to deals in one way or another – deals with unions, deals with contractors and other service providers, even deals with the State of Connecticut. I'm confident that my legal experience can bring great benefit to the people of New Canaan."

Williams was a member of the Board of Education committee that negotiated the current three-year contract with New Canaan’s teachers. According to Williams, that contract provided new work requirements for teachers that enabled the district to cut back significantly on the number of teacher aides. It also provided for increases in health insurance co-payments by teachers as well as a pause in the traditional “lock-step” increase in their compensation, he said.

"We have maintained the balance of being fiscally prudent yet educationally sound, despite the significant increase in enrollment during that period,” Williams said in the release. “As Selectman, I believe I can put that experience to good use."
