Norwalk Hospital to Open Facility in New Canaan [Update]

Both Stamford and Norwalk Hospitals plan to open medical offices in town.

plans to open an urgent care facility and medical office at 28 East Ave. in New Canaan. On Tuesday night the Planning & Zoning Commission approved a site plan application presented by the hospital.

Jim Haynes, executive director of facilities management for the hospital, said the medical office will be used by one physician at a time in a rotation of specialists. He told the commission the hours for the medical office are expected to be 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the urgent care facility open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The building’s façade will be updated, but the footprint will remain unchanged, according to architectural drawings presented to the commission.

The hospital asked and was given approval for 27 parking spaces rather than the 28 required by zoning. Hospital representatives said with a planned total staff of seven and the anticipation of 10 patient cars at any given time they thought parking would be adequate. Board members agreed.

In support of both applications, Commission Secretary Jean Grzelecki said she thought the facility will benefit the New Canaan community.

“We do not have a facility like that,” she said. “With an aging population this is clearly a benefit to the community."

Last night’s approval means two hospitals will soon have satellite facilities in New Canaan.
