OEM: New Technology in New Canaan for Hurricane Season

It's Hurricane Preparedness Week, so Patch thought there'd be no better person with whom to sit down and chat about improvements in New Canaan over last year's safety measures than Mike Handler, the town's director of the Office of Emergency Management.

He talked about he integration of the town's existing SmartPrepare software with Smart911, which would give emergency responders supplementary information provided by community members.

For instance, the Smart911 system would keep emergency responders informed about where residents in town with special needs like oxygen tanks or refrigerated medicine were located, as well as information on where residents with helpful skills were located, like the address of a retired nurse, should the resident choose to share that information with the town.

He also talked about the possibility of New Canaan adopting a statewide protocol if it proved to be more useful than the system built by the town itself.

Check out his commentary in the video above.
