House Minority Leader Larry Cafero Won't Seek Re-election

State House Minority Leader Larry Cafero, a Norwalk Republican, has announced he won't seek re-election this year after serving in the House since he was first elected in 1992.

Larry Cafero of Norwalk, the minority leader in the Connecticut House of Representatives, has announced he won't seek re-election to his seat this year.

"The only motivation one needs to serve is a desire to make the little piece of the world they live in a better place,” the Republican wrote in a letter to the editor to The Hour, according to the newspaper. “Only time and others will judge whether I accomplished that goal in my years of service, but it has been an absolute privilege and honor to serve.”

Cafero has been a state representative since he was first elected in 1992 to his seat representing the 142nd District, which covers the northern and most of the western sides of the city.

"He has been able to work with the Democratic majority to get things done, while still upholding the Republican emphasis on tighter budgets and tax cuts," according to an article in the New Haven Register. "Cafero’s chief of staff, George Gallo, resigned in February after being named a person of interest as the FBI looks into the GOP caucus’ campaign vendor mailings."

A lifelong resident of Norwalk, he served on the Board of Education for six years and was chairman when he was elected to the House of Representatives, according to his statehouse website.

A graduate of Norwalk High School, Cafero earned a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Connecticut and his law degree from Western New England College School of Law. He is a partner in the Hartford  law firm of Brown, Rudnick. Cafero is also the expulsion hearing officer for Norwalk Public Schools.

Cafero lives in Norwalk with his wife Barbara and has three children -- Jacqueline, Christopher, and Nicholas.

State Sen. Bob Duff, a Democrat who also represents Norwalk, released a statement Wednesday praising him as an advocate for Norwalk.

Duff's statement said, in part: "Larry is my friend and someone who I'm going to miss. We maybe from different political parties, but that never stopped us from coming together on issues that were right for our state and important to Norwalk. He is someone who I respect [...]

"It will be tough not seeing Larry around the Capitol. I've learned a lot by working together and from watching him. There are few people with his keen political skill, institutional knowledge and amazing sense of humor."

Update 1:18 p.m.:

After Cafero announced his decision not to run for re-election from the floor of the state House of Representatives in Hartford, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman, both Democrats, released statements praising the Republican:

Malloy said:

“During his 22 years serving in the House of Representatives, Larry Cafero has consistently been one of the most passionate and energetic voices at the State Capitol.  He has fought hard for his constituents year in and year out, and he’s done it with character and good humor.  I’m proud to have worked with him across the aisle on critical issues like job growth, improving Connecticut schools, and making our state a safer place to work and live.  Aside from being a colleague, he’s become a friend, and I wish him, his wife Barbara, and their children the very best.”

Wyman said:

“Representative Cafero is an institution here at the General Assembly.  His leadership, quick wit, and good heart will be greatly missed.  I was a State Representative when he was elected — from day one he has vigorously represented his district and been a strong advocate for his constituents.  For more than two decades, Representative Cafero has been generous of his time and expertise in encouraging Connecticut to be a better, stronger state.”

Nicole, were you inebriated when you typed that or are you just a bad typist and don't bother proof-reading? And exactly what did I say qualifies as a hissy fit? Answer me this Nicole, what is it that the protestors in Kiev complained about more, the lack of civilian gun ownership in Ukraine or that Ukraine had too many civilian gun goons? Think about that before you answer.

What do you think? I grew up in a time where girls were no longer told they had to take typing class & become secretaries until they landed the boss! Are you gun bullies really stupid enough to believe your own comparison of the U.S. w/ the Ukraine/Russia, N. Korea or even Cambodia?? The rest of America, those of us w/ working minds, find it ridiculous! Apples & oranges as the saying goes! Although I may dream of a day when civilians are only allowed hunting weapons or hand guns for defense right now we are just trying to keep weapons out of the hands of psychopaths & domestic abusers, same difference right, so why are gun bullies trying to block that? It's COMMON SENSE!!
