I have doffed my farmer hat this morning and taken up my insurance standard. That's me standing on the corner waving and shouting, "CHECK YOUR BASEMENT....CHECK YOUR SUMP PUMP."
Most serious basement water problems can be avoided by frequent trips down the stairs so you can head off any incursion, and make preemptive placement of personal items and furnishings (get them up off the floor). While you're down there, check to be sure your sump pump is plugged in, free of any debris, and actually doing it's job.
