I looked into Straight Talk wireless about a year and a half ago and I was not happy with the reviews or the Data speeds they offered to smartphone users. At this time AT&T and Verizon where rolling out the LTE networks and I wanted top speeds. Well now Straight Talk offers LTE speeds over the AT&T (GSM) networks, but over the Verizon (CDMA) network Straight Talk is limited to certain phones.

What is Straight Talk? Straight Talk is a Wal-Mart rebranding of the Tracfone Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) service that offers both CDMA (Verizon and Sprint) and GSM (AT&T and T-Mobile) service. Basically they buy the minutes and data in mass quantities from the large carriers and then resell them at a discounted rate. So in reality you are able to use the larger carrier’s cell towers, cell service and all the features but you pay less.

Why choose Straight Talk now? Well recently, fall of 13, Straight Talk started offering LTE over the AT&T network. They also changed their user agreement and removed the following lines restricting streaming media “(iii) uploading, downloading or streaming of audio or video programming or games”.

The current plans available from Straight Talk are:

The $30 All You Need plan gives you 1,000 nationwide talking minutes 1,000 Nationwide Text and MMS messages, 30 MB of data, and unlimited 411 calls.

The Flag Ship service is their $45 Unlimited Plan. With this plan you get Unlimited Voice, Text and MMS and Unlimited Data, which has a soft limit of 2.5 Gigs at LTE speeds and 2G speeds after that. It also includes unlimited 411.

If you like to call Internationally, Straight Talk offers an Unlimited International calling Plan for $60 a month, which includes everything in the $45 Unlimited plans does with unlimited international voice calls.

Let’s look at an example of the savings these plans can offer you, I currently pay $175.13 (total taxes and fees) for two phones on the AT&T network with a total of 700 shared voice minutes. I have a 15% discount from my Company and we are grandfathered into the unlimited data plan. At $96.58 (total taxes and fees) for two phones from Straight Talk, I will see a savings of $78.55 a month. I am using the same AT&T LTE network I am currently on, with the addition of unlimited voice service. That is a $942.60 a year savings. If you want even more savings you can purchase up to a year of Straight Talk Unlimited Plan for $495 a year + Taxes and fees per phone, lowering your monthly purchase price to $43 a month per phone.

Now for phones, you can purchase phones directly from Straight Talk or you can bring an unlocked GSM or CDMA phone. I switched over an unlocked AT&T IPhone 5 and an unlocked AT&T Samsung Galaxy SIII. However, Straight Talk does offer some of the newest Smart phones like the IPhone 5 and Samsung SIII for around $400.

If you would like to keep your current phone number Straight Talk can transfer that for you as well.

Hopefully you see the benefits of switching to Straight Talk, as you still use the big carrier networks, your current phone and your current phone number all while saving money.
